Moorland Guides Launch... and a trip to East Shallowford Farm

Yesterday (3 April) a hardy group of enthusiastic walkers braved the cold and attended the launch of Moorland Guides at Postbridge, which has been set up as a result of funding cuts leading to DNPA dropping their programme of guided walks. Moorland Guides will be offering walks to suit all tastes and abilities, plus regular weekly walks from DNPA's Information Centres at Haytor (10am Wed), Princetown (2pm Thurs) and Postbridge (10am Tues). Check out the website: www.moorlandguides.co.uk. I went along to support the event and listen to DNPA's Orlando Rutter and MG's Simon Dell explaining the new set-up. As well as guided walks, map and compass and GPS training days will also be on offer.

Last week I spent a wonderful day recording the memories of Miss Elizabeth Braund of East Shallowford Farm, who has for the last 60 years worked with young people from London, first at a 'youth club' in the early 1950s, and since the 1970s through residential stays at her farm near Widecombe. Now approaching her 91st birthday, her life story is just amazing! This feature will appear in the summer 2012 issue.
